A court ordered the Dutch state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent, following a citizen lawsuit, a first that could set a global precedent. "The court orders the state to limit its total volume of greenhouse gas to reduce it by at least 25 percent in 2020 compared to 1990 levels," declared Judge Hans Hofhuis, during a public hearing at the court in La Is. Citizens, who were asking for a 40 percent reduction in 2020 compared to 1990 emissions, hope that this decision will serve as a basis for other judicial actions in the world. "Everyone agrees that the severity and magnitude of climate change requires measures to be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," the court stated. "The State must do more to reverse the imminent danger caused by climate change, given its duty to protect and improve the environment." The court specified that the control of Dutch emissions is one of the tasks of the State. Marjan Minnesam, director of Urgenda, described the decision as a world first. "Never before has a State been brought to justice in this way," he said, "this has set a precedent.
Millions of people already suffering the consequences of climate change expect that we, the people responsible for emissions, who can act, will do so in time," he added in a statement. According to Urgenda, it is the first time that an organization and citizens have tried to hold the State responsible for its inaction against global warming. It is also the first time that human rights have been used as a legal basis Europe Cell Phone Number List to protect citizens against climate change. “This ruling is a milestone in the history of climate legislation, because it is the first time that a court has ordered a government to increase its climate ambitions,” said Wendel Trio, director of the European network for climate action. When we browse the Internet we usually think about many things, such as the comfort of the interface or the quality of the information on the website, but it rarely crosses our mind to question how green the pages we visit are and why this is important.

To help us learn more about energy efficiency on the grid, Greenpeace created its annual Click Clean report . The 2015 document, which can be downloaded here , details the power that technology companies have to lead an evolution in the use of renewable energy. According to Greenpeace, if the internet were a country, its electricity demand would be the sixth largest in the world, so this industry has an enormous responsibility. What the study found is that more and more companies are opting for renewable energy, but there are also energy monopolies that continue with their unmodern practices. Specifically, Greenpeace points to Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com that serves as web hosting for many sites, that has promised to run on 100% clean energy, but does not transparently communicate what steps it has taken to achieve this. The report shows in a graph where the analyzed companies are on the path. Image via Greenpeace.
